after approximately five months of living in texas, i decided yesterday that it was high time i got that pesky but ultimately vital piece of documentation otherwise known as a driver's license. so off to the dps i went. having grown up in the thick of long island, i was confused to enter the small building filled only with a few chairs and two bored looking women sitting behind one long counter.
"can i help you?" one drawled.
i approached the counter and explained that i needed a license. filled out the paperwork, took the test, and only got three questions wrong. then she asked me when i would like to take my road test.
"as soon as possible," i said.
"well, when would be good for you?"
"when would be good for you?" blank stare. "um, how about now?"
"that'll be fine."
the woman then steps back from the counter, dons a nifty jacket, spins around three times (i made that part up) and suddenly she is the driving tester. we go outside, i drive, and while dodging pot holes, we realize her daughter also graduated from purchase college about ten years ago.
needless to say i passed my road test, and am now the (ahem) proud owner of a texas driver's license. which can't help but make me wonder where i'll be going next.
